RESEARCH LINKS TAXOTERE® TO PERMANENT ALOPECIA IN WOMEN

Cancer patients are warned of the side effects they can expect to face before undergoing chemotherapy. One of the most well-documented of these consequences is temporary hair loss. In most cases, patients are told they can expect complete hair regrowth 3–6 months after they complete their treatment. But since the mid-2000s, reports of permanent hair loss after chemotherapy treatment have increased.

A study published by Annals of Oncology analyzed 20 female breast cancer patients who suffered permanent alopecia after undergoing chemotherapy. Researchers concluded that taxane chemotherapy drugs like Taxotere “seem to be responsible for [severe and permanent female hair loss].” Nutritional deficiencies and hormonal imbalance, two factors linked to female hair loss, were ruled out as factors among the study’s participants.
