Keep These Tennessee School Zone Laws in Mind

When class is in session in Nashville, it can mean increased traffic in the mornings and afternoons.

If you pass through school zones during your daily commute, it’s a good time to refresh your knowledge of school zone laws. Driving safely through these areas not only decreases your risk of being involved in an accident, but it also reduces your chances of getting an expensive citation.

REMEMBER THESE LAWS WHEN YOU DRIVE THROUGH A SCHOOL ZONE

Three school zone-related laws that all Tennessee drivers should know include:

  • Crossing guards dictate the right of way. Even if you have a green light or otherwise would have the right of way at an intersection, the crossing guard (if present) dictates when you’re allowed to proceed.
  • Speed limits are strictly enforced and can vary from school to school. Never assume that all school zones have the same speed limit. All schools and school districts set their own speed limits, and they can range from 5 mph on campuses to 30 mph on adjacent roads.
  • School safety zones encompass 500 feet around school property. Previously, this area was 1,000 feet around school property, but the law was changed in 2020. Fines and penalties for certain crimes, including drug crimes, are increased when they occur inside school safety zones.

School zones are vital for helping students get to and from class safely, and local police departments and sheriff’s offices watch them carefully for drivers who violate traffic laws.

Drivers should always be aware of the presence of pedestrians, whether they’re passing through school zones, intersections, or residential areas.
