How to Prepare Your Vehicle for a Summer Road Trip

Memorial Day has come and gone, and that means the unofficial start to summer has arrived. If you’re planning on traveling somewhere this summer, you aren’t alone. Millions of Americans are planning on taking trips this summer, despite record-high gas prices.

It’s important to be as prepared as possible when you go on a summer road trip. That means mapping your destination, packing plenty of drinks and snacks, and ensuring your vehicle is in tip-top shape. Here are a few steps to take to ensure your car will get your family to your destination on time and without unnecessary headaches:

  • Fill up or replace your tires—Blowouts are more common in the summer. High temperatures can wreak havoc on tires that are underinflated or worn. Put air into underinflated tires and replace tires that are damaged or heavily worn.
  • Fill up your windshield wiper fluid reservoir—To drive safely, you need to be able to see clearly. A dirty windshield isn’t just annoying, it can be dangerous. Don’t get caught on the road with a dirty windshield and no way to clean it. Fill up your reservoir now before you leave.
  • Replace broken wiper blades—Summer downpours can be intense, and if your wiper blades are broken or ineffective, you won’t be able to see while driving. Check them for signs of wear or damage, and if they no longer work properly, replace them.
